He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert E.  and Willene May Bickel.

Don was an Eagle Scout and was retired from the US Army as Chief Warrant Officer 2.   He graduated from Oregon Davis High School in 1970 and enlisted in the army in 1972. He served two tours in Germany and was honorably discharged in 1992.  While in the service, Don was in receipt of many awards.  Don was commended for his performance for the Administration and Logistical Center operations during the North Atlantic Treaty Organization tactical evaluation while assigned to D battery, first battalion, 9th Field Artillery. His planning and coordination proved invaluable to the unit’s performance.  As the PLL specialist, he was commended for maintaining 100% accountability of over 600 line items.  Upon his discharge, Battery Commander, Louis Gibson, cited that Don had distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service throughout his military career from 22 June 1972 to 30 June 1992.  His performance of numerous positions of great trust and grave responsibility has been conducted with aptitude, integrity and valor. He rose to meet every challenge head on and accomplish the missions with self-determination.  He is truly a dedicated professional and his service contributions reflect great credit upon him, the Warrant Officer Corps, and the United States Army.  Don was the course manager for the Pershing 11 officer’s course, pre-command course, and Pershing missile system.
